Company Profile
How Splitter Creek Veneer got its start
Approximately 17 Years ago a young Amish fella by the name of Uri Miller, at the age of 24, was visiting some family down in Ohio. He came across one of them making Veneer stone. Uri a Builder by trade as well as a farmer and an old barn removal expert at the time thought to himself, this could be something for him. He was looking for something that would keep him home a little more so he would be able to spend more time on the farm. Time passed and he did some research as to where he could purchase his molds, and what all was involved in making Stone Veneer. Uri finally settled on one company from Oklahoma City, and soon was on his way to a new adventure. He went down to Oklahoma where they gave him a very comprehensive course on making veneer stone. Uri came home with the knowledge he needed and a fist full of molds. But that was just the start, he started to make his veneer but there was still a lot to learn. After a lot of trial and error and a few thousand square feet of stone scraped he finally had a product he could sell. Uri also enlisted the help of Stubbe’s precast and Williams form hardware to help him out with color, strength testing, add mixes, and a whole host of other R&D issues that he came across. It did not take him long and he was producing stone for the surrounding community.
I met Uri For the first time in the spring of 2010. I introduced myself as a bricklayer and that I would be interested in purchasing stone from him. He was more than glad to oblige. Throughout that summer I did not have any veneer jobs that came up, but, about mid August I got a call from Uri asking me if I could look at a few jobs for him. One night after supper I picked him up and we went to take a look at them. Home well after dark and as we were driving up his driveway he mentioned he still had two loads of hay that needed to be put into the barn! I told him that I would help with that. " Personally I think he needed my help and that is why he called me out that night". Leaving his place at 1:30 am that night feeling good.,one because I had a belly full of good Amish made apple pie, secondly because I knew that we would be working together a lot more in the future. As time passed we did indeed spend a lot more time together on different projects. There were times where I enlisted his help and there was times where he enlisted mine.
Early in 2016 I had heard through the rumor mill that Uri had plans to move out to Pei. This was quite a shock for me as he had not said anything to me about it. So I approached him about it, and he told me that he had gone out to Pei to take a look around, but, he was not sure if he was going to go. As the months went by we continued to work together. Early June Uri called me and told me that he Indeed was going to Pei and that he was leaving mid September. I said to him "that’s not good!!" And I asked him “ Who is going to make my stone”.
Thinking he had plans of taking the business with him, his reply Shocked me! He did not bat an eye, he simply said “you are going to make your own stone”. Somewhat surprised I said, "I guess we better sit down and talk" . The next few months were very busy. I spent a lot of time with Uri learning all the do’s of making veneer as well as all the don’ts.
Splitter Creek veneer has been making veneer now since 2001 under the watchful eye of Uri And now my self and my family We continue to make stone today. We carry on what Uri started, which is the best, strongest, and the greenest Veneer Stone made in the world.
